The Hush Post: Haryana government is all set to fix the term of Mayors, Senior Deputy Mayors and Deputy Mayors of Municipal Corporations at two-and-a-half years. It is not clear as to why the government is making such a move, however, it is for sure that the government seems to be inspired from states like Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra. Though, there are some states where the Mayor is in office for just a year.
It is being said that fixing the term for two-and-a-half years will help in rotation of the reservation system. If the Mayor’s post is reserved for a female, then a councillor belonging to SC category will be the Senior Deputy Mayor. At the same time, the Deputy Mayor post will remain open for general category.
At present, Mayors are chosen indirectly by the councillors, hence it is certain that the majority bloc will continue to have its say. In such a scenario, it doesn’t seem that this move will bring about a radical change. The only modification would be that the majority party will be able to oblige six of its councillors. This will also help the main party maintain the majority as parties or independents supporting it can be promised berths at a certain point of time. The real picture will however become clear once the change is implemented.
