The Hush Post: The police in Kerala have booked the professor of Farook College in Kozhikode, whose alleged speech had triggered Watermelon Protests, on the charges of outraging the modesty of women.
An FIR has been registered against accused Professor Jouhar Munawar.
A student of Farook College has lodged the complaint against him after the video of a speech he made at a gathering went viral. The speech was made at least two months ago, but the video went viral, just a week ago, NDTV reported on Friday.
Earlier on March 20, in a unique and rather a literally bold protest, two Kerala women had posted their topless photos on their Facebook wall to show their resentment against the professor of a college who had accused the female students of his college for showing their busts like “slices of watermelon”.
The Facebook immediately took down these topless pictures and blocked these two women’s FB account. But the move has spread like a wildfire and raised a storm and has resulted in positive and negative response.
According to the reports, a professor at the Farook Training College in Kozhikode had reportedly stated that female students in his college don’t cover their busts and rather partially show the same as “slice of redwatermelon.” These comments triggered a protest among the women folks and the two women took that literally bold step.
“I am a teacher of a college where 80 per cent of the students are girls and of that, a majority are Muslims. These girls are not wearing the dress as per the religious tradition. They are not covering their chests with hijab. But showing part of it is like a slice of red watermelon being displayed,” The Deccan Chronicle had quoted the professor as saying.
Retaliating to such derogatory comments, a man named Vishnu shared topless pictures of his partner, Arathy SA, on Facebook. Following their example, Thiruvanantapuram-based Facebook user Diya Sana posted similar pictures of herself, the report said.
