The Hush Post: President Ram Nath Kovind had tears in his eyes when he conferred the Ashok Chakra to the widow of Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala at the Republic Day Parade. Ashok Chakra is the highest peacetime military decoration. Nirala was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra. Nirala was an Air Force Garud commando posted in Jammu and Kashmir, when he was martyred.
Corporal Nirala gave the supreme sacrifice of his life but not before gunning down two terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora in November.
On November 18 2017, the military launched an attack in Chanderger village, Bandipora after specific intelligence inputs. The Garud detachment started a covert operation and came close to the house where the terrorists were hiding. Corporal Nirala was hit by a couple of small arms fire. He was critically injured, but even in injury he continued the retaliatory fire till he breathed his last and not before bringing down the terrorists.
After presenting the award to Corporal Nirala’s wife Sushmanand and his mother Malti Devi at the Republic Day Parade, Kovind was seen in an emotional state wiping tears with handerkerchief. Corporal Nirala was part of a Garud Special Forces Unit of the Indian Air Force, a detachment of which was attached to a Rashtriya Rifles for Op Rakshak.
