The Hush Post: In a sensational twist to the murder case of Punjab Shiv Sena leader Durga Prasad Gupta, Rampal, a ‘potential witness’ today committed suicide by jumping into the Sirhind Canal. Rampal had today been summoned by the NIA for questioning, but he ended his life before that.
Rampal’s son, Manish Kumar has alleged that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was constantly pressurising his father to become a witness in the case. He was quite disturbed for the last couple of days as the police used to summon him anywhere and anytime, he said. Manish also accused the police of threatening his father.
According to Manish, Rampal told him on Monday that he had been summoned by the NIA the next day (Tuesday) for questioning. The NIA people would take him along at 9 am, Rampal had said. Manish said that Rampal committed suicide as he was intimidated by the NIA and he could not bear it anymore.
Punjab Shiv Sena’s labour wing chief, Durga Prasad Gupta was gunned down by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants on 23 April, 2016 at Lalehri Chowk in Khanna, Ludhiana. The NIA took over the probe into the case in December last year. Besides, the NIA is also investigating killings of 5 other Hindu outfit leaders in Punjab in which role of terror groups owing allegiance to the so-called Khalistan movement are suspected. Earlier, these cases were being probed by the Punjab Police.
