The Hush Post: The government has appointed SR Mardi as the new DGP of the state. At present, he is posted as DGP, Home Guards and Civil Defence and replaces Somesh Goyal.
An IPS officer of 1986 batch of the Himachal cadre, he was promoted as the DGP in 2014. During his 32-year service as police officer, Mardi has served as SP, Shimla, Kinnaur and Hamirpur, DIG and IG Vigilance.
In another controversial posting, the BJP government has transferred SP Una, Sanjeev Gandhi, who had initiated a drive against illegal mining in the district. He has been transferred to police battalion, Junga, in Shimla district. Interestingly, in the last two days, SP Sanjeev Gandhi had registered 27 cases against illegal mining activities in Una district.
He had also initiated further inquiry and was in the process of collecting information regarding the areas from which illegally mined material was being lifted in Una and sold in Punjab and the adjoining states. After the police action, owners of mining sites and stone crushers had gone on strike.
The Himachal High Court had sought a status report on illegal mining from the Una police for which the SP was to file an affidavit. His present stint as SP Una lasted for just 4 months. Earlier also during the stint of the Congress government then posted as SP Kangra, Gandhi had launched a drive against the mining mafia.
