The Hush Post: The much-awaited elections to Municipal Corporations in three districts of Punjab — Amritsar, Jalandhar and Patiala—and 29 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats will be held on Sunday. Voting will be held from 8 am to 4 pm and the results will be declared by the evening. Voting for the civic elections will take place on Electronic Voting Machines. Elections for Ludhiana Municipal Corporation are not taking place yet. Elections will be conducted with 50 per cent reservation for women.
The MC elections are crucial for the incumbent Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s Congress government in Punjab at it will test its performance eight months after it came to power. Also, it is the first time the Aam Admi Party (AAP) will makes its presence felt in the civic polls, and will be an indication whether it has gathered itself post the Punjab Assembly poll debacle early this year.
A spokesman of the State Election Commission said that in 90 wards, the candidates have won unopposed and out of these 3 candidates belong to the Patiala Municipal Corporation and 87 to Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats. 8,000 election staff and 15,500 police personnel would perform duties at the polling stations. The spokesman further said that the commission has also ordered videography in all the polling stations declared very sensitive. As per the orders issued in respect of counting of votes, the returning officer of the ward concerned would order counting only after the voting process is complete and the ballot papers are prepared.
