The Hush Post: After Sonia Gandhi’s 19 years long reign as Congress president ended today, her son Rahul Gandhi took over. In a grand ceremony held at 24 Akbar Road party headquarters in New Delhi, after speeches by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul delivered his first speech as president, shifting gears from Hindi to English and vice-versa. Sonia Gandhi’s speech was interrupted by loud noises of bursting of crackers by over-enthusiastic party workers and she had to stop her speech in between several times. She felt slightly uncomfortable in the din, when Rahul managed to cool her down.
“Rahul is my son and not proper for me to praise him. But I have to say, from his childhood, he has faced the brunt of violence and since he came into politics he has been facing vicious personal attacks too. I am proud of his patience,” said the outgoing part president who is also the longest serving president of the party. Before Sonia Gandhi left the stage for Rahul to speak, he kissed her forehead and then began. Giving a personal touch to his speech, he said, “I am an idealist like millions of Indians. Politics of our times is devoid of kindness and truth. It is devoid of common man’s concerns. Politics is being used to crush ordinary people. It should be a tool to lift them up.” He said that he would make it the Grand Old and Young Party, instead of the grand old party it is referred to as. The Head of Central Election Authority, Mullapally Ramachandran, handed over the ‘Certificate of Election’ to the newly-elected president of the Indian National Congress.
