Ludhiana: In addition to ensuring growth in collections and making more and more people tax compliant, the IRS officers posted at chief commissioner of income tax (CCIT) Ludhiana office have turned into green warriors who are not only working overtime and even spending money from their own pocket to turn Ludhiana into a green and clean city by making vertical gardens on several buildings in the city. Whats even more fascinating is that by this initiative they are also getting rid of the waste non-recyclable bottles and using them as pots to grow beautiful plants in them on walls of the buildings. Taking cues from Israeli technology of drip irrigation system and vertical gardening the officers have “Indianised” the technology to cut the costs considerably.
“Green Plastic” initiative, which is brainchild of CCIT Binay K Jha and Additional Commissioner Rohit Mehra, was launched by department on July 24th,2017 (income tax day) worried over the rising levels of pollution in Ludhiana and city being included in the list of most polluted cities of world, both the officials hit upon the idea of making vertical garden in the Rishi Nagar headquarters of department. They started with a small wall of their office and today the entire building of IT office is covered with more than 10,000 bottled plants and plastic flower pots giving this building the looks of a corporate building of any Western country. The results of installing this unique garden at IT office took everyone by surprise when a recent study conducted by a scientist of CIPHET, proved that the vertical garden at IT office had cut down pollution in and around the building by more than four times.
Along with becoming a famous landmark now this vertical garden has also become a selfie point for the city residents and visitors to the IT office. This vertical garden has caught attention of many and now with help of IT department similar garden is coming up at Gurudwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib where work of first phase is over and it is being highly appreciated by the devotees who too are contributing to this cause by donating waste bottles and plants.
Taking the “Green Plastic” project forward to the next level IT department has now got consent from more than 200 schools and several corporates of Ludhiana to assist them in making more than 500 vertical gardens in Ludhiana district. On Wednesday Principal chief commissioner of income tax North West Region, Madhu Mahajan presided over a program at IT office, Rishi Nagar and lauded the efforts put in by CCIT Jha and his team of officers to become initiators of change along with dispensing their duties as tax officials. Speaking on the ocassion Mahajan said, “Our Ludhiana office has lit one lamp in direction of the green cause and we will now try to take this to the entire region”
