The Hush Post: After the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) received complaints from the armed forces personnel, it has issued a circular to those manning toll gates to “salute” and give a “standing ovation” to armed forces personnel when they cross toll plazas as a mark of respect for their service to the nation. There were complaints of misbehaviour, using of harsh language and seeking further proof even after seeing their identity cards by the NHAI toll barriers at some places. Personnel of armed forces are exempt from toll while on duty.
NHAI chairman Deepak Kumar said that toll operators have been asked to provide behavioural training to their staff. The tourism ministry and their hotel management institutions have been roped in to help them with the training, he said. “Armed forces personnel deserve the highest regard and should be given due respect at the toll plaza including salute and standing ovation as deemed fit,” an NHAI circular said. The highways authority said verification of ID cards of armed forces personnel should be done by senior/competent authority and should not be left to “untrained lowest staff”.
