The Hush Post: Congress president Rahul Gandhi has put his stamp on journalist-turned-Congress MLA Mukesh Agnihotri as the Leader of Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha.
It is considered as a major victory for former chief Minister Virbhadra Singh after the Congress party losing power in state and has also helped him cut state party president Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu to size who seems to have ideological differences with the former chief minister.
The party organizational polls are the next challenge for the CLP where Sukhu might lose his position as party president. Sources say, apart from 3-4 legislators, majority of the MLAs wanted Virbhadra to take over the charge as Leader of Opposition. When he declined, he proposed his close confidante Agnihotri’s name, most of the legislators agreed. There were 3-4 legislators who forwarded Shillai MLA Harshavardhan Chauhan’s name but due to lesser support for him as compared to Agnihotri, he lost the race.
Four time MLA from Haroli constituency in Una Mukesh Agnihotri is considered as Virbhadra’s right hand man who has been close to him since his journalistic days. He worked as a senior correspondent with the ‘Jansatta’ newspaper before joining politics.
