The Hush Post: Wife donates liver to her husband on death bed and saves her. Forty-four-year-old Subhas from Lakshmikantapur West Bengal was on a death bed after doctor diagnosed him with liver cirrhosis. When he had reconciled with the fact that death is imminent, his 29-year-old wife Mithu put her own life in danger.
It all started in June 2015, when Subhas was diagnosed with the illness. With his small earnings, he had nothing to bank upon financially. When Subhas could not find a donor, Mithu came forward risking her own life.
She went to the doctors in Kolkata’s Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital and asked them that they take part of her liver and implant in her husband’s body. Fortunately, the results came positive for the transplant and Mithu donated 60 per cent of her liver to her husband.
The complex surgery was carried out in November 2017 by Dr Gopal Krishna Dhali and Dr Abhijit Chowdhury, the heads of the gastroenterology department at the SSKM Hospital. The West Bengal state subsidised the cost of surgery and post-operative care. After donating her liver, Mithu spent nearly a month in hospital with her husband. In November last, they were discharged from the hospital. Residents of Lakshmikantapur’s Poler Haat, the couple are loving every moment of togetherness post-recovery.
