The Hush Post: 61-year-old Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi is no more. Best known for her critically acclaimed film Rudaali, Lajmi died in Mumbai on Sunday. She suffered from kidney cancer. Actor Huma Qureshi tweeted early morning that Lajmi died at about 4.30 am.

Recently, her book was launched in Mumbai on September 8 on her companion of 40 years, Bhupen Hazarika. She could not be present at the launch as she was hospitaliased. The book ‘Bhupen Hazarika – As I Knew Him’ was launched by Shyam Benegal. She had started working on the book after being detected with cancer.

Lajmi was an independent filmmaker who worked on realistic cinema and low-budget films. Her films were mostly woman-oriented films. She was a longtime manager with film-maker Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

Many from the Indian film industry including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Soni Razdan and Neena Gupta helped her out financially to fight cancer.

She was the daughter of painter Lalita Lajmi and niece of filmmaker Guru Dutt. Lajmi made her debut as an assistant director of veteran film maker Shyam Benegal. She directed her last film Chingari with Mithun Chakraborty, Anuj Sawhney and Sushmita Sen in 2006.

Lajmi’s Rudaali was the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards. The film, however, was not accepted as a nominee. A votary of parallel cinema, her other films include Chingaari, Ek Pal, Darmiyaan: In Between and Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence.
