Speculations are rife that Shatrughan Sinha will contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019’s Lok Sabha elections. Popularly called “Shotgun” is likely to contest against PM Modi on a Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket.

Senior Samajwadi Party leaders have indicated that the party may field actor-turned-politician against Modi from the temple town.

These speculations have started flying thick and fast. It happened after Shatrughan and another former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha attended a function at the Samajwadi Party office. The party had organised this function to mark the birth anniversary of Jaiprakash Narain.

Shatrughan Sinha and former Union finance minister Yashwant Sinha launched a scathing attack against the BJP and PM Narendra Modi. After that the SP leaders went into a huddle to discuss the possibility of roping in Shatrughan against the PM, a report said.

A vocal ideological opponent of PM Modi, Shatrughan is reportedly searching for a safe seat to contest 2019 polls. Sources said that the SP can offer him a Lok Sabha ticket if he resigns from the saffron party before the General Election. Political pundits said that the former actor has a good fan base in Varanasi. The dissenting BJP Parliamentarian is also having a good number supporters of “kayasth” community in Varanasi, the report said.

Varanasi saw an outpouring of emotions in the wake of recent attacks in Gujarat on migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Some persons had even put up posters in Varanasi denouncing PM Modi.

The report further said that some top SP leaders have brought the likely candidature of Shatrughan Sinha in the notice of party president Akhilesh Yadav.
