The Hush Post: Following the Income Tax Department’s action against  Punjab Cabinet Minister  Navjot Singh Sidhu, the cricketer-turned-politician has blamed former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal for the development and hatching a conspiracy to defame him.

The Punjab Cabinet Minister said he had deposited Rs 3 crore as income tax, however an ANI report had stated Sidhu had tax dues amounting to Rs 52 lakh.

“They have sent me income tax notices at my Patiala and Delhi residences. I do not stay at both the addresses anymore. A month ago they sent a notice to my bank asking them to freeze my accounts. I learnt about it then and the very day I paid the remaining amount. Everything was cleared that day,” Sidhu was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.

Before that, an Income Tax officer had said the Punjab Minister’s accounts had been sealed as he had failed to provide evidence to substantiate his income and refused to pay dues of tax. Sidhu had reportedly declared certain expenditure towards dress expenditures, tour and travelling that were not supported by actual bills. For this his income was reassessed and a fresh demand was raised.

Holding Junior Badal for responsible for this by using the Income Tax department to attack him, Sidhu questioned that why a person who had spent Rs 40-50 lakh just like that won’t pay income tax of a few lakh. “Can you even think that a person who gives away Rs 40 to 50 lakh just like that would not pay income tax of a few lakhs? All this is a conspiracy hatched by Sukhbir. It is not even worth a reaction,” The Indian Express quoted Sidhu as having said.

Sidhu had filed an appeal against the order in January last year but the commissioner of Income Tax Appeals passed a judgment in favour of the Income Tax Department’s claims.
