Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has drawn himself into yet another controversy. A pro-Khalistan activist Gopal Singh Chawla has posted picture on his facebook page shaking hands with Sidhu in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa was also seen greeting Chawla warmly on the sidelines of the Kartarpur Sahib function on Wednesday.
Chawla’s presence at the ground-breaking ceremony attended by Indian ministers and Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, raised many questions.
Why disdain for Gopal Singh Chawla?
Chawla heads the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. He provoked anger in India when he had stopped Indian officials from visiting a Lahore gurudwara a few days before the Kartarpur Sahib corridor announcement.
His name also cropped up a few days ago during investigations into a grenade attack at the Nirankari Bhawan in Amritsar in which three persons were killed.
He is also believed to be close to terrorist Hafiz Saeed and has also been photographed with him.
Chawla is known for spewing venom against India and Indian security forces. He is an ardent supporter of Khalistan, a separate nation for Punjabi Indians. He also wants majority part of Punjab province of Pakistan to come under the ambit of Khalistan.
The Khalistan movement, which called for a separate Khalistan to be carved out of Punjab, saw large-scale violence in the 1980s.
