The suspense over new Congress president may get over tomorrow. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is meeting on Saturday and reports say the new president will be decided tomorrow. News reports suggest Mukul Wasnik has emerged as the frontrunner for the top post.
NDTV reported that Wasnik, a Congress general secretary, may be given the charge when the CWC meets tomorrow.
After another humiliating defeat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi had stepped down as the party president. Ever since no one has been at the helm of affairs of the grand old party. Since Rahul Gandhi had made it clear that no one from the Gandhi family would take up the reins, names of certain Congress leaders from outside the Nehru-Gandhi family have cropped up for the position.
This would be for the first time in the last 20 years that a non-Gandhi will be the president of the Congress.
WHO IS MUKUL WASNIK ?
Mukul Wasnik is a Congress leader from Maharashtra and comes from a political background. His father Balkrishna Wasnik was a senior Congress leader and a three-time MP.
Born on September 2, 1959, Wasnik has a post graduate degree to his name. He entered student politics during his college days and has been the national president of the Youth Congress and the NSUI. Wasnik has closely worked with Sonia Ganhdi and two former prime ministers – Narsimha Rao and Dr. Manmohan Singh. He is known for his organizational skills.
A former social justice and empowerment minister, Mukul Wasnik is a four-time MP and was the youngest MP when he made to the Lok Sabha for the first time. He has represented Buldhada and Ramtek Lok Sabha seats in Maharasthra.
Besides Wasnik, other Congress leaders who could make the cut include Mallikarjun Khadge, former home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and former uninon minister Kumari Sailja.
