The Hush Post: A 12-year old Dalit student in Punjab’s Jalandhar district attempted suicide after he was allegedly compelled to drink urine by his classmates.  The boy got multiple fractures after he jumped from the roof of his house.

Earlier, after the incident, when he made a complaint to his teacher, she slapped and took him to the principal. On Tuesday, Shriki Sharma, the teacher was charged with allegedly assaulting the boy and using casteist slurs against him.

His mother lodged a complaint against the teacher alleging that some of the boy’s classmates allegedly urinated in his water bottle and ridiculed him after he drank it.

She also complained that she was called by the school authorities, where she was insulted and casteist remarks were made against her son.

The state Scheduled Castes Commission has taken the matter into their hands and its member, Raj Kumar Hans visited the school and the boy’s family, seeking a report by August 29.

An FIR has been lodged against Sharma under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code and under various sections of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the officer said.
