Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and legislator HS Phoolka has resigned from the Punjab assembly. He submitted his resignation today. Phoolka is an AAP legislator from the Dakha constituency in Ludhiana district. He is a Delhi-based lawyer and activist.
The AAP leader had demanded from the government to register cases against former chief minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal, SAD president and former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and former director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini.
He had earlier said that if Congress government did not take action against those behind incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, and those involved in police firing in October 2015, he would resign from the Assembly.
Earlier, Phoolka had deferred his resignation. This after the Punjab and Haryana High Court had stayed action against four police officers accused of firing on protesters. Phoolka said the court did not stay proceedings against Saini on Thursday. “I’m resigning in protest against the government’s deliberate inaction.” With his exit, AAP’s strength in the Vidhan Sabha will drop to 19, of whom eight have formed a rebel group.
