The Hush Post: A Chandigarh trial court has held Jagtar Singh Tara guilty for the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. The court of additional district and sessions judge JS Sidhu will pronounce the quantum of sentence on Saturday. The trial was held inside Burail Jail in Chandigarh.
The trial concluded on Friday, Tara who belongs to Dekwala village near Rupnagar, has already confessed to his crime thrice before the court. He has also said many times that he had no regrets about what had happened.
Jagtar Singh Tara along with two accused Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora had escaped from Burail jail after digging a 110-feet long tunnel from their barracks in January 2004. While Hawara and Bheora were arrested, Tara managed to escape. He was arrested in Thailand in 2015 and brought to India. The police had taken nine accused in custody, out of whom the fate of eight has been already decided.
Submitting a six-page confession in the court of Additional District And Sessions Judge JS Sidhu ,Tara had made his confession during the hearing in the case in January. Besides admitting to the crime, he had also given a detailed explanation for the assassination.
The then chief minister of Punjab Beant Singh was killed in an explosion outside the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh in 1995. Punjab police employee Dilawar Singh had acted as a human bomb in the incident.
