Cricketer Harbhajan Singh has been approached by the Bharatiya Janata Party to fight the 2019 elections for the party from Amritsar Lok Sabha Constituency. Former diplomat Hardeep Puri is also being talked about to fight from this constituency. However, given the cricketer’s fan base, Har bhajan could be a clear favourite if he accedes to the BJP wish.
A senior BJP leader privy to the development said the party is in talks with the spinner. Harbhajan till recently was busy with commentary for the India-Australia cricket series.
Meanwhile, Harbhajan has acknowledged that the BJP did contact him to contest from Amritsar. However, nothing concrete has happened in this regard. “I have not met any top BJP leader on the issue,” said the 38-year-old, who is the third highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket after Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev.
“I am not sure if this is the right time to join politics. Even if I make up my mind, there is very less time left to make preparations for the polls,” he added.
Harbhajan is being seen as someone who can fit the bill of Punjab local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, also a former cricketer. Sidhu was brought in in 2004 by none other than the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was able to wrest the seat from Congress’ RL Bhatia, who had been a five-time sitting MP.
Union finance minister Arun Jaitley also contested from this seat in 2014 but lost to Amarinder Singh.
