Former minister and four-time lawmaker Gobind Singh Longowal, was today re-elected 43rd President of Shiromani Gurdwara Pharbandhak Committee (SGPC) during its annual general house meeting held here today in the Teja Singh Samundari hall.
He was elected the president last year 2017. Gobind Singh Longowal is the former driver of late Harchand Singh Longowal.
Former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur proposed the name of the Gobind Longowal which was passed unanimously.
Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar and Alvinderpal Singh Pakhoke seconded the name. No other name was proposed as the opposition group led by Sukhdev Singh Bhuar had announced to boycott the election.
Langowal was the MLA in 1985, 1997, 2002 and 2015. The last time around, he won by-elections from Dhuri when Congress MLA Arvind Khanna resigned in 2015. Longowal also remained minister in the Akali government. He became SGPC member in 2011. Bhai Gobind Singh Longowal has been re-elected as president. Gurbachan Singh as general secretary, Raghujit Singh Virk as senior vice-president, Bikkar Singh Channu, Junior vice-president.
