After the Dussehra celebrations turned black in Amritsar on Friday due to the train tragedy which killed 61 people, the local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has said that he will take the complete financial burden of all those orphaned as a result of the tragedy. He said that he will take care of the entire educational and other expenses such as food, ration and clothing on himself. In other words, he will raise these families back from the rubble.
On Monday, while addressing the press, he also gave away the cheques of Rs five lakh each to the families of those who were killed. This money comes from the state government exchequer.
Notably, Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu was being held responsible for the tragedy. Many said that she turned up late for the Dussehra celebrations. She should have been there at the scheduled time of 6:30 pm. However, she reached at 6:40 pm. This resulted in the delay of the burning of the effigy of Ravana which coincided with the coming of trains and subsequent mayhem. However, Navjot Kaur clarified that she had no option since she had attended three functions before this ill-fated one and immediately left for another one when she came to know about the tragedy.
On Friday, 61 people were killed and about as many injured as they were crushed under an on coming train on Dussehra after a crowd ran towards the railway track to escape the fire which spread from the burning of the Ravana effigy.
