On Thursday, Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu were given a clean chit in the Amritsar train mishap case. The train tragedy that took place on October 19 in which more than 61 people were killed. Over 70 were injured when people were watching the burning of the Ravana effigy from near and on the railway track.
Since the incident, Sidhu has been in the line of fire. His wife was the chief guest at the Dussehra event.
In this case, B Purushartha was appointed as a Special Executive Magistrate to look into the tragedy. The 300-page investigation report says, Sidhu and his wife has been given given a clean chit.
According to sources, Sidhu got a clean chit because he was not present in Amritsar that day. His wife, although the chief guest at the function, could not be held responsible. The magistrate, in his report, has indicted the organiser, Sourab Mithu Madan, president of Dussehra Committee (East) and son of a Congress councillor, stating that he should have ensured safety of the people as he had chosen the venue.
It is believed that soon this report will be handed over to the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
Sidhu had declared that he will adopt the families of those who died in the Amritsar train tragedy. Making the announcement at a press conference, Sidhu had said, “I will take care of them for the rest of my life.”
Dismissing attacks on his wife, Sidhu had questioned the role of the Centre after the incident, asking why the driver was given a clean chit within six hours of the mishap? Is it possible that a train is approaching and the guards can’t see it?” the cricketer-turned-politician had said.
