The Hush Post: Punjab and Haryana High Court Wednesday stayed proceedings against three police officials in the Behbal Kalan firing case. The stay has been granted till the next hearing on September 20.
A single bench of Justice R K Jain also issued notice of motion to the Punjab government seeking its reply.
Names of former Moga SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma, SSP Raghbir Singh and SHO Amarjit Singh were included in the FIR that was registered on October 21, 2015. The police officers were booked in accordance with the recommendations of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission.
The three had moved the high court challenging the commission’s recommendations. The commission had held that the police firing in Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura was “unprovoked, unwarranted and uncalled.”
The petitioners pleaded, “It is submitted that the report of the Commission not only suffers from violation of the provisions of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, but is also against the evidence on record.”
The police officers have also have contended that the earlier Justice Zora Singh Commission, appointed by the previous Akali-BJP government wasn’t denotified before the appointment of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission.
