Punjab to give death penalty to drug trafficking offenders, CM Capt. Amarinder Singh’s proposal to Centre

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting called to deliberate over the issue today in Chandigarh

The Hush Post: Facing widespread criticism from all corners for the rampant drug menace in the state, Punjab Chief Minister today announced that his government has decided to hand down death penalty for drug trafficking.  The state government has forwarded its proposal in this regard to the Centre government.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting called to deliberate over the issue today at the Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh.

Following the meet, Capt. Amarinder Singh tweeted, “My government has decided to recommend the death penalty for drug peddling/smuggling. The recommendation is being forwarded to the Union government. Since drug peddling is destroying entire generations, it deserves exemplary punishment. I stand by my commitment for a drug-free Punjab”.

It is to be noted that during the run-up to the Assembly polls in 2017, Capt. Amarinder Singh, while holding the holy Gutka Sahib in his hands, had taken an oath to eradicate drug menace within four weeks of coming into power. The Chief Minister has been on the radar of the opposition ever since even as the number of instances of drug peddling and deaths due to drug overdose have been on the rise.

The decision of handing down capital punishment to drug trafficking offenders though may draw ire from certain quarters with opponents terming the law as draconian.
