The Hush Post, Ludhiana: A deadly fire broke out at new Sabzi Mandi on Jalandhar bypass Ludhiana. The incident happened at 10.45 am behind the sheds at the fruit Mandi. The reason for the outbreak of fire could not be ascertained. However, it caught plastic crates used in the Sabzi Mandi and soon it spread and engulfed the entire market.
About 25,000 to 30,000 crates went up in flames to form a thick cover of black bellowing clouds. The fire brigade was informed instantly as a result of which they were able to control the fire within next one hour. No loss of life was reported though loss to the tune of Rs 10 lakh was estimated.
This is the second big fire in Ludhiana in three months. Last time, the fire broke out in a multi-storey plastic manufacturing unit which killed 13 people, including six firemen and a dalit leader Lachman Dravid. The fire safety in the city, particularly, the old town is a thing of concern with many places where the fire brigade vehicles cannot reach with ease. A result of which is that by the time the fire can be controlled, most of the damage is done.
