The Hush Post: The death of Harshita Bansal, a 10-year-old class V student has put spotlight on the healthcare of children.
The question most are asking is how can a child die of a probably silent heart attack? Doctors at eMedicine Health suggest, children whose parents suffer from high cholesterol, are too are likely to suffer from elevated cholesterol levels. However, a death in sleep is still the most unlikely thing.
However, experts recommend that children with high cholesterol should be monitored carefully with time to time tests.
Also there are children, who do not run and are generally inactive and show lack of interest in games, such children should be medically examined.
Among affluent families in places like Ludhiana, cases of inactivity added with junk food intake is on the rise and it is a cause of concern.
In scenarios like that of Harshita Bansal, Dr Rajendra Gulati a leading paediatrician says, symptoms are always present in a child but if one misses those symptoms it can lead to something like a death. But if one is careful the child will definitely show one or the other symptom.
Among children, cholesterol of 190 mg/dl and above is termed as high. However children who have a family history, strokes or heart disease, a level of 160 mg/dl too is considered to be a risk factor.
Ten-year-old Harishita a student of Sacred Heart School Sarabha Nagar reached home from school yesterday. She played and then went to sleep. However, when her mother tried to wake her up, she wouldn’t get up. The doctor was called who said that she had expired at least half-an-hour ago.
