Jagraon Police bust gang involved in foodgrain thefts at govt godowns

The Hush Post: The Ludhiana Rural (Jagraon) Police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers for robbing wheat and rice bags from government godowns and recovered 1200 bags of wheat and rice from them. The accused use to sell the robbed grains to different flour mills.

The arrested accused have been identified as Charanjit Singh alias Happy Johal of Changna village, Manmohan Singh alias Mohna of Atam Nagar of Jagraon, Jograj Singh alias Joga of Golden Bagh of Jagraon, Ravir Singh alias Viru of Rampura Mohalla of Jagraon, Jagdeb Singh alias Billa of Karnail Gate of Jagraon and Amandeep alias Amna of Jagraon.

The police have also recovered a gun .12 Bore along with five live cartridges, two swords and iron rods from them.

Ludhiana Rural (Jagraon) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varinder Singh Brar said that the accused have robbed 150 bags of rice from Pungrain godowns in Chhapar village on August 28 after overpowering the watchmen on gunpoint. A case was registered against the accused at Jodhan police station against unidentified accused.

SSP Brar added that the police arrested the accused from Raikot Road in Jagraon following a tip-off. The accused were carrying 325 bags of grains in a truck.

Following the information provided by the accused, the police have seized 975 more bags from an isolated land near Jagraon.

A case under sections 457, 380, 411 of IPC, sections 25,27/54/59 of Arms Act has been registered against them at City Jagraon police station.

The SSP further added that the accused use to rob government godowns and sell the grains among flour mills. The police have been identifying flour mills owners who buy grains from them and will take action against them.

“Charanjit Singh alias Happy is the kingpin of the gang. The gang is active in various districts including Moga, Sangrur and Khanna. At least 30 cases of robbery and burglaries have been registered against them. Charanjit Singh was into real estate business and possesses property in various districts of Punjab,” SSP Brar said.

“The accused are drug addicts and use to procure drugs by making money out of robberies of burglaries. More important information has been expected from the accused during questioning,” the SSP added.
