The Hush Post: The Kerala Police has reached Jalandhar to investigate the matter in the rape case filed by a Kerala nun allegedly by the Bishop of Jalandhar Diocese of Syro-Malabar Church, Franco Mulakkal.
Meanwhile, a form is being distributed in churches across Punjab and the nuns are being asked to sign it. The form says that bishop Franco Mulakkal is a man of good character. The nuns have been asked to acknowledge that they have been working with him for the last few years and never has any immoral incident happened with him.
Many nuns have refused to sign the form. Many NGOs and social welfare organisations had come together and submitted a memorandum to the Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner to get him arrested.
An FIR was registered against him and the bishop also got a counter complaint registered against the nun who has alleged rape 14 times. He alleged that the complainant nun had been transferred so she was seeking revenge from him. The bishop also alleged that the nun, who is the mother superior of a convent, was blackmailing and threatening to implicate him in a case of sexual harassment.
The victim, who hails from Kuravilangad near Kottayam, accused the bishop of raping her on several occasions between 2014 and 2016. The nun has alleged that the bishop sexually exploited her after calling her on the pretext of discussing an important issue in 2014. The victim said that over the next two years, she was raped 14 times by the bishop.
It was reported that the nun made a complaint to the church last year and was forced to lodge a complaint to the cops after the church did not take action against the bishop. The nun said after lodging the complaint, she was sacked from her official position and complaints of financial irregularities were framed against her.
Bishop Mullakkal, hailing from Kottayam, was appointed as the Auxillory Bishop of Delhi diocese in 2009 and made the bishop of Jalandhar in 2013.
The case surfaced at a time when a believer of the Orthodox Church filed a complaint against five priests alleging that they sexually exploited his wife for many years on the basis of a confession she made to one of them. The police had registered a case after the intervention of the National Women Commission in this case.
