Kerala police interrogated him after he was summoned by Punjab police to reach Jalandhar from Chandigarh
The Hush Post: The bishop of Jalandhar church Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a Kerala nun, was questioned by the Kerala police for over five hours in Jalandhar. The questioning which began Monday night continued till early Tuesday morning.
Mulakkal was away to Chandigarh and reached Jalandhar only when he was asked by the police to do so.
A few Delhi- based journalists have alleged that they were manhandled and their cameras and equipment were broken by personal guards of the bishop when they reached his house.
Meanwhile, the Kerala police on Monday told the Kerala High Court that the Bishop had repeatedly raped the nun for almost two years, between May 2014 and September 2016 and confined her in a convent in Kerala.
The police were replying to a petition filed by the Kerala Catholic Church Reformation Movement (KCRM), which claimed that the police were not taking speedy action in the case.
The police gave a status report to the court, including the statements of three top Catholic priests, two bishops and a cardinal. “The statement of the doctor who conducted the medical test on the survivor was also recorded in which she says there is evidence of sexual assault,” the police told the court.
Police have also questioned and recorded the statements of several other nuns who lived in the same convent as the survivor. These nuns, police say, were aware of the happenings. Police have also questioned the father of a nun, who wrote a letter to him saying, “My life is in danger and if anything happened to her, Bishop Franco is responsible for her misery.”
The police said the statements of a woman in Delhi, who is also the prime witness in the case and her husband, were taken on August 3.
The police said there are discrepancies in the dates mentioned by him and the nun. His mobile phone and other evidence submitted by him have been taken for further examination.
48 days after Bishop Franco Mulakkal was booked for rape, he is yet to be arrested.
