Khanna Police bust inter-state gang of thieves | 7 arrested with stolen items worth Rs 1 crore

Shourie, Khanna: The Khanna Police claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of thieves that was involved in about 36 robberies and have arrested members of the gang including its kingpin and have seized stolen items worth over Rs 1 crore and Rs 8 lakh cash from them. This gang was active in different districts of Punjab where it had committed more than 28 robberies. The gang had also committed eight robberies in Haryana.

Addressing a press conference, Khanna SSP Dhruv Dahiya said that a police party led by SP (I) Jasvir Singh and DSP (I) JS Cheema along with other police personnel had set up a naka near Jagera Bridge after receiving secret information. During the naka the police party intercepted a truck and a canter coming from Ludhiana side.

The SSP said four persons, who were later identified as Nirmal Singh, a resident of Shabdalpur in Patiala district, Gopal Singh, a resident of Ghumana Chowk near Sudhar, Hira Singh, a resident of Dhaipai in Gurdaspur district and presently residing in Barnala and Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Ludhiana who were sitting in truck. Three persons were sitting in a canter and were later identified as the driver of canter Surjit Singh, a resident of Shabdalpur, Gurnam Singh a resident of Neeh Singh in Dist. Karnal in Haryana and Chamkaur Singh, a resident of Andlu village in Ludhiana district.

During the search of the vehicles, the police party seized 140 bags of wheat, 440 cases of pesticides and also seized 13 LCDs, 4 microwaves, 13 washing machines and 10 refrigerators from the canter.

SSP Dahiya said that on questioning of arrested persons, the police recovered Rs 8 lakh cash and a stolen Bolero Jeep from them. The SSP said the truck and canter being used by the accused were also found to be stolen ones and they were using these vehicles for thefts.

The SSP said that as per preliminary investigation, this gang was active since 2010 and Nirmal Singh was the kingpin of this gang. The SSP said this gang had committed 7 robberies in Ludhiana district, 2 robberies in Gurdaspur, 5 in Patiala, 2 in Hoshiarpur, 2 in Jalandhar, 5 in Barnala, 3 in Amritsar, 1 each in  Mansa and Moga districts. The gang had also committed 8 robberies in Haryana.

SSP Dahiya stated that the gang members admitted a major theft at Lucky TV Centre Khanna comprising of 7 LCD’S, 15 Washing machines, 5 AC’’s, 2 TVs and 2 Geysers. SSP said that a case under section 379-B, 411, 413, 473 IPC had been registered at Police Station Maloud and the arrested will be presented in a court tomorrow for further legal action in this regard.

Speaking about the modus operandi of the gang, the SSP said that the gang members had close ties with each other and some are related to each other.

The Khanna Police chief said that gang leader Nirmal Singh and others had a criminal record and a number of cases are already pending against them at different places. The SSP said that the gang members strike at any shop after recee and later they decamped with most of the valuables from the shops by putting items in vehicles.

SSP Dahiya further said that Nirmal Singh had not married but was staying in a live-in relation with two women in Sudhar. The SSP said that the arrested one Gopal Singh alias Bunty is the stepson of kingpin Nirmal Singh while Surjeet Singh is the cousin of Nirmal Singh. The SSP said that they will inform the police of other districts to verify about more thefts at different places committed by this gang.
