The Punjab Democratic Alliance (PDA) has announced MLA Simarjit Singh Bains as its candidate from Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat. The Atam Nagar MLA’s party- Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) is a part of the PDA which is contesting on all the 13 LS seats in Punjab.
Simarjit Singh Bains had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Ludhiana as an independent. Ravneet Singh Bittu, the sitting MP, had defeated his closest rival Aam Aadmi Party’s HS Phoolka.
Bains had stood a distant fourth after Akali Dal’s Manpreet Singh Ayali. Bains had secured 1.96 lakh votes in the 2014 elections while Ayali got 2.56 lakh votes, HS Phoolka secured 3.01 lakh votes and Ravneet Singh Bittu won the elections by securing 3.20 lakh votes. About two years later he formed the Lok Insaaf Party.
For the 2019 parliamentary polls, Bains has tied up with the PDA. The alliance has Ranjit Singh Brahmpura’s SAD (Taksali), Sukhpal Khaira’s Punjab Ekta Party, Dr. Dharamvir Gandhi’s Nava Punjab Party and the BSP.
The Ludhiana constituency has always seen a keen contest between the Congress and the Akali Dal. The Congress has already declared sitting MP Ravneet Singh Bittu as its candidate.
The Shiromani Akali Dal is likely to field former adviser to the chief minister and senior leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal.
