Ludhiana Police crack attempt on life of Dera head’s son; four arrested including real sister of victim

The Hush Post: With the arrest of four persons, the Ludhiana Police claim to have solved a murderous attempt on Manpreet Singh, son of Dera head Baba Narang Singh.

The arrested accused persons include victim’s widow sister and her paramour. The police claimed that the accused wanted to marry, but they found the victim as the biggest hurdle. Moreover, the accused also wanted to grab the property of the Dera head.

Earlier, the police were suspecting it to be an attempted target killing. The police have also seized weapon a .32 bore revolver, a country-made pistol and a motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.

The arrested accused persons include Annypreet Kaur of Haibowal, who is the real sister of the victim, her paramour Satnam Singh of Village Ghuman of Gurdaspur, his accomplices Sukhdev Singh of Village Kot Mehtab of Amritsar, Jashanjot Singh of Village Ghuman of Gurdaspur. Another accused Jashanjot is yet to be arrested. Satnam Singh is a driver of Baba Narang Singh, head of two deras- including Gurudwara Manji Sahib, Nawanshahr and Salwana Sahib of Phillaur.

Commissioner of Ludhiana Police Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill said that the accused have confessed their crime.

The police chief said that on July 10 at 9 PM when Manpreet Singh alias Mani of Chuharpur of Haibowal was going back to home on his motorcycle the accused with covered faces intercepted him. The accused fled from the spot after pumping two bullets into his body. One bullet has hit near the chin and another hit on the lower abdomen. The victim was rushed to the hospital.

After the incident, the police reached the spot and initiated investigation. The incident had recorded in the CCTVs installed in the area. The police traced the motorcycle number and reached to the accused.

“In the investigation, we found that Annypreet, 32, sister of the victim, was married to Sandeep Singh of Bathinda in February 2008. She has a son from her marriage. After the death of her husband, Annypreet along with her 10-year-old son has shifted to her brother’s home in Haibowal. She met Satnam Singh, 33, six months ago and developed illicit relations with her. Satnam Singh had joined Narang Singh eight months ago as a driver,” said Commissioner Gill said.

“Annypreet and Satman decided to get married and they have an eye on the property and ‘gaddi’ of dera head. They assumed that they could get both –property and gaddi, if they kill Manpreet Singh. They also assumed Manpreet Singh as the main hurdle in their marriage, so they hatched a conspiracy to kill him,” the police chief added.

On July 10, Satnam along with his accomplice Jasvir Singh alias Jassi opened fire on Manpreet Singh and fled. A case of attempt to murder was registered against unidentified accused at police station Haibowal.

Commissioner Gill said that Annypreet was in contact with Satnam Singh on WhatsApp. She has bought a mobile phone number exclusively for talking to Satnam Singh. After the incident, Satnam Singh texted Annypreet that ‘I have killed him (Manpreet)’, in reply Annypreet sent a message  ‘no, you missed, he is alive’.

The police have seized mobile phone of both of the accused, in which all conversations are recorded.

Satnam Singh is also married and has two children. He told Annypreet that divorce case with his wife is in the court. After divorcing his wife he will marry her.

Manpreet Singh has inter-caste marriage and he has a daughter.

The Ludhiana police chief added that the accused Satnam Singh has borrowed .32 bore revolver from his friend Sukhdev Singh and returned it back to him after opening fire on Manpreet Singh. He borrowed a motorcycle from Jashanjot Singh for the crime. Jasvir Singh was driving the motorcycle, while Satnam Singh had opened fire on Manpreet Singh.

Children used to play volleyball near the spot, where the accused have decided to target Manpreet. Two days before the crime, they have damaged volleyball net installed in the area and broken street light, so that the children would not come there to play. However, they had captured in the CCTVs installed in the area. While scanning the video the police found two turbaned men behind the attack.

The accused had also chased Manpreet Singh in Nawanshahr, but failed to kill him.
