Punjab Zila Parishad, Panchayat Samiti polls: Tension grips Moga after SAD men allegedly open fire, one Cong worker injured

A heated argument between the two factions apparently snowballed into a clash and someone amongst the mob opened fire

The Hush Post: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supporters allegedly shot at a Congress worker during the filing of nominations for the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls in Moga’s Dharamkot today. The incident took place at the SDM office at around 10 am in the morning. The injured was immediately rushed to Ludhiana even as the police resorted to lathi-charge and firing tear gas shells to disperse the warring factions.

The injured has been identified as 40-year-old Simranjit Singh, a resident of Datewala village in the district. Friday was the last day for filing the nominations. Simranjit Singh was accompanying a Congress candidate to the SDM office. The SAD workers were too present at the venue to in support of their candidate.

According to reports, a heated argument between the two factions apparently snowballed into a clash and someone amongst the mob opened fire. In the melee, a bullet hit Simranjit Singh. Three bullets were fired on the spot, claim news reports.

Heavy police force was at once deployed in the area with SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor himself rushing to the venue. The situation was soon brought under control. However, around 2 pm Akali workers allegedly attacked the Congressmen again. An additional police force was rushed to the spot and the mob had to be dispersed using lathi-charge and tear gas shells.

Throughout the day the situation remained tense.
