Man killed by lions inside Chhatbir Zoo lion safari

A man was mauled to death inside the lion safari of Chhatbir Zoo in Mohali on Sunday afternoon.
There were four lions in the lion safari at the time of the incident. The victim was attacked by a lion and a lioness. He had probably scaled a 30-feet high iron-meshed boundary wall. He entered the safari from the Ghaggar river side through the forest area.
The lioness Shilpa held him by the neck and the lion Yuvraj held him by the head. He was mauled by them for the next eight minutes after which he was rescued by the zoo staff. The zoo officials and staff immediately reached the spot and tried to free the victim from the lion’s clutches by blowing their vehicles’ horns.
He was taken to Dera Bassi civil hospital but he died during treatment.
The man, believed to be around 25 years old, was spotted by drivers of the buses that ferry tourists inside the lion safari.The people on the bus were witness to the incident awe-struck and filled with fear.
The lion safari has been closed for the time being for visitors following the incident.
