SAD leader arrested after two months of hiding in rape case

The police on Thursday arrested senior SAD leader, Harvinder Singh Harpalpur, for allegedly raping and cheating a woman in Patiala. Harpalpur is the nephew of MP Prem Singh Chandumajra and cousin of MLA from Sanaur Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra.

In November, the victim had alleged “threat to her life and children”. The police had registered an FIR pertaining to rape, cheating and conspiracy against Harpalpur on November 2.
According to a news report, a police team rounded up Harpalpur who was hiding for the last two months. The victim had alleged that the accused was threatening her.

The 40-year-old widow belongs to Ghanaur village. She is uneducated and has 13 bighas of land. As per the FIR, victim, after the death of her husband, she wanted to get the land transferred in her name.
“A former sarpanch of Baghora village and Harpalpur took my thumb impression on some documents,” she had alleged in the FIR.
“Once I gave them the documents, they asked for sexual favours to get the work done,” the victim alleged.
When I denied, they refused to return my documents, following which I accepted the demand, she said.
Harpalpur had termed the allegations baseless and “politically motivated”.
