Punjab Budget 2018 highlights: Education, Youth, Health, Industry, Agriculture, Infrastructure

The Hush Post: The Punjab Government today announced the state budget. Salient features of the Punjab Budget are:

  1. Education:
  • Free books in government schools till class 12
  • Punjabi University gets Rs 50 crore and Punjab University Rs 42 crore
  • 1500 schools to get RO system for drinking water
  • Rs 10 crore fund for free sanitary napkins in schools
  • SC/ST students to get scholarships after Class 8
  • Free Wifi in government colleges

2. Youth:

  • Chamkaur Sahib to get Rs 100 crore Kushal University and Kushal Vikas Yojana
  • 3000 jobs in BPOs to be created

3. Health:

  • Rs 4015 crore total budgetary proposal
  • For cancer and drug abuse, eradication boards to be created with a corpus of Rs 25 crore.
  • NRHM gets Rs 914.57 crore
  • New hospitals in Doraha and Ganaur
  • Bhatinda Civil Hospital to be revamped
  • Trauma Centres on National Highways to get Rs 20 crore
  • Rs 30 crore for CM Cancer Relief Fund
  • Rs 39 crore State Cancer Institute in Amritsar
  • Rs 45 crore Cancer Care Centre in Fazilka
  • Patiala and Amritsar Medical Colleges to be revamped with Rs 73 crore

4. Industry:

  • Subsidised Rs 5 per unit of electricity to be charged from industries – corpus of Rs 1400 crore set aside.
  • MSMEs to have easier policies
  • Start ups to get more incentives
  • Amritsar to get STPO Centre

5. Agriculture:

  • Rs 14734 crore total budgetary proposal
  • Rs 4250 crore farm loan waiver
  • Doraha to get floriculture excellence centre
  • Free power to farmers; Rs 6256 crore allocated

6. Religion and Culture:

  • To celebrate the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak in 2019, Rs 100 crore proposed.
  • Sultanpur Lodhi and Dera Baba Nanak get Rs 10 crore each
  • Medical/film Tourism gets single window clearance system.

7. Infrastructure:

  • Rs 500 crore to Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar for smart city project
  • Rs 230 crore for four bridges and rural roads

8. General facts:

  • Rs 1,29,698 crore Budget
  • Yearly revenue of the government Rs 1,22,923 crore
  • Till 2019 Punjab will have a debt of Rs 2,11,253 crore
  • Rs 200 development tax per month; government will earn Rs 1500 crore through this
