The Punjab government has slashed bus fares in the state. The fares have been reduced from 8 to 16 paise per kilometer per passenger. The buses for which the fares have been lowered include both ordinary and luxury buses.
In a press release, Punjab Transport minister Aruna Chaudhary informed that the reduced fares will come into force with immediate effect.
It is to be noted that bus fares in Punjab were increased thrice last year. The tariffs were increased by 2 paise in February and six paise in June, and seven paise in November. But with the Lok Sabha elections approaching, the state government has decided to go for a cut.
The ordinary bus fare now has been reduced to Rs. 109 paise per kilometer per passenger from 117 paise earlier. The fare of air-conditioned buses has been decreased by 9.60 paise while the travelling in integral coach too has become cheaper.
The fare for integral coach has come down to 196.20 paise per passenger per kilometer. Similarly, the super integral coach fares have been reduced by 16 paise to 218 paise per kilometer per passenger.
