The Hush Post: Punjab government is in the process of individually identifying the property tax evaders in Ludhiana city. About three lakh 10 thousand house owners are not depositing property tax and are willfully violating the regulation. They are being identified.
Ludhiana happens to be the city with highest number of property evaders. According to the local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu,”When the government records were sought, we were informed that there are a total of 90,000 houses in Ludhiana and thus tax should be collected from 90,000 house owners. However, when a satellite imaging was carried out, it was found that there are 4 lakh houses in Ludhiana which come under the ambit of property tax.”
He added, “You can imagine the extent of property tax evasion in the city by the ones who are well-to-do.” The same is also true about other cities of Punjab but to a lesser extent particularly the government is, apart from Ludhiana, zeroing in on Patiala, Jalandhar and Amritsar.
Just yesterday, Capt Amarinder Singh said that the state will put a check on illegal construction with the help of Ludhiana Remote Image Sensing, Punjab. Notably, Ludhiana has a population of 17-lakh according to the 2011 Census while the total population of Ludhiana district is 36 lakh. However, the government has only been collecting property tax from less than one lakh property owners in Ludhiana city.
