An assistant sub-inspector of Punjab Police was nabbed by relatives of a nursing student in Ropar on Friday. He allegedly molested her during a bus journey from Chandigarh to Ropar.
The victim’s relatives handed over the suspect, Baljinder Singh, to the local police. However, the police let him off in the evening. The police claimed that the victim or her parents have not lodged any formal complaint in this regard.
ASI touches the girl inappropriately
Baljinder Singh boarded the bus from Chandigarh and sat on the adjoining seat of the girl. The victim alleged that he started harassing her and touched her inappropriately.
She said she asked him to stop it, but he continued harassing her. He also gave her his mobile number and asked her to keep in touch with him in future.
The victim called up her brother on the mobile phone and apprised him of the incident. The girl’s relatives reached the old bus stand in Ropar town and nabbed Baljinder Singh.
After learning about the incident, the crowd at the bus stand got enraged and one of them slapped the ASI, according to a news report. Police personnel reached the spot and took him to the police station.
Parents refuse to lodge complaint
Senior Superintendent of Police Swapan Sharma said the victim and her parents refused to lodge a formal complaint against the ASI. They demanded a written apology from the ASI in the presence of his wife. After the ASI tendered an apology in front of his wife, he was let off, the SSP said, while talking to a regional daily.
