The Hush Post: Sand prices will half once the mining report is submitted. The six-member cabinet sub-committee constituted under Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has submitted its report to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
If the recommendations of the mining report are followed a trolley containing 100 cubic feet of sand would cost around Rs 1,000. The present rate is about Rs 2,500 per 100 cubic feet of sand and goes upto Rs 3,000- Rs 4,000.
A tipper containing 100 cubic feet of sand costs around Rs 12,000- Rs13,000 which would cost Rs 6,000 after the implementation of the report. A truck full of sand usually costs anywhere beyond Rs 20,000. The cost will reduce to almost half the current price, if the recommendations are implemented.
The recommendations will be discussed in a Cabinet meeting after which they would be implemented. Contractors would be at the receiving end as it would put a tab on illegal mining. Whereas the government coffers earn a revenue of about Rs 40,000 – Rs 50,000 crore through auction system followed at present, if the recommendations are implemented, it will benefit the government to the tune of Rs 100,000 crore.
The current contracts will remain with the contractors and the future contracts will be taken by the government.
