Investigation in rape cases has been made mandatory to be completed within two months
The Hush Post: Rapists of minor girls in Punjab will now be hanged to death. The state Cabinet under Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has given a go-ahead to the implementation of an ordinance promulgated by the Centre in this regard.
The ordinance provides death penalty for the rape of a girl child under 12 years of age. The minimum punishment for the offence of rape of a girl child under 16 years of age has been fixed at life imprisonment, earlier the provision provided 20 years of rigorous imprisonment, extendable to imprisonment. In other cases, minimum punishment for rape has been extended from the existing seven to 10 years.
Investigation in rape cases has been made mandatory to be completed within two months. Trial is also required to be completed in two months, with a total limit of six months fixed for disposal of appeals in all rape cases.
No anticipatory bail will be granted to the person accused of rape of a girl under 16 years of age.
Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal, Rajasthan and Haryana are the other states which have already adopted the ordinance.
