Scores of Punjab Congress today shut down operations of Ladhowal toll plaza in Ludhiana. The Congress workers were led by Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu. Ludhiana mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu, MLA Surinder Dawar and MLA Sanjay Talwar were also present.
MLA Surinder Dawar and senior deputy mayor Sham Sundar reached the Ladhowal toll plaza and shut the barricades. They were later joined by Ravneet Singh Bittu and Bharat Bhushan Ashu. They then locked the toll plaza office. The vehicles were allowed to cross the barrier without paying any money.
Bittu said he took the step ‘in public interest’ as the company concerned was not taking matter related to the completion of incomplete flyovers within the Ludhiana city seriously.
The Ludhiana MP had earlier shot a letter to Union Minister for Road Transport Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari highlighting incomplete six-laning of national highway (NH) project.
Notably, construction work on flyovers in Ludhiana city at Sherpur Chowk, Cancer Hospital Chowk, Tajpur Road and Basti Jodhwal Chowk is hanging fire for several months. This, other than causing traffic congestion has also led to several road mishaps.
Bittu added that NHAI director had also ordered in December that the toll plaza be shut down. The Assembly committee has also decided to close down the plaza, he added.
Meanwhile, the toll plaza officials said they will lodge a complaint with the police against the Congress workers.
