The Hush Post: The Punjab Police has taken a big initiative to bring in the much-needed transparency in functioning of the police force and to help people reach out more to the police whenever needed. Now, complainants who get an FIR registered at any police station in Punjab would get SMSs on their registered mobile numbers updating them on the progress of the FIR filed in any part of Punjab.
They would also get details on the phone of investigating officers (IOs) assigned to investigate their cases, which means their names and contact numbers as well.
SMS alert would be sent to complainants in case of arrest of the accused, change of the IO and submission of challan/ final report. Launching the quick SMS service at Punjab Police headquarter, Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora said that citizens could also download the copy of FIR from Punjab Police website.
Citizens must update their mobile numbers if there is a change in the phone number. Punjab police personnel have been under the scanner many a times for misuse of power, corrupt practices, fake encounters, police inaction and collusion with the accused.
It seems to be a big step in bringing in transparency and building of trust between the common man and the police.
