The Hush Post: It will be a tough day today for scores of commuters as the employees of Punjab Roadways will be on a day-long strike to press for their “long-pending” demands.

The people who commute through the buses of Punjab Roadways are expected to be hit hard today. The people are bound to face a lot of inconvenience with as many as 1900 buses of Punjab Roadways and PunBus will remain off the roads due to the roadways employees’ strike, a report in The Tribune said.

The Punjab Roadways employees said they have been struggling for getting their demands fulfilled by the state government since long. In past too, the Punjab Roadways staffers had called day-long strike on February 21 this year and it had caused a lot of inconveniences for the people. The Roadways employees said they have held several meetings with government authorities to sort out the issue but the government has not moved even a single step to resolve the issue thus forcing them to go on strike, the report said.

“We held countless meetings with senior authorities of transport department during past six months. We even met transport minister on May 21 and apprised him about our demands. Every time we were given assurances but on the ground, nothing has been done so we have decided to observe strike to put pressure on the government,” Joint Action Committee President of Punjab Roadways, Rainder Singh, was quoted as saying in the report.

The Roadways employees are demanding regularising the services of contractual workers on seniority basis, increasing salaries of contractual staff, implementing Supreme Court’s ruling of equal work equal pay, implementing 6th pay commission recommendations, inclusion of 596 debt-free Punbuses along with their staff in Punjab Roadways, curbing corruption in the department, preparing appropriate timing shifts for private and roadways buses, increasing fleet of roadways buses, making available spare parts of buses in roadways workshops etc, the report said.

The Roadways employees have also declared to keep all the Punjab Roadways bus stands shut across the state today during the strike. The closing of bus stands on the day would further increase problems of the commuters as they would have to board buses from roadsides, it was reported.

Though the senior officials of the Punjab Roadways are trying their best to convince the agitating employees to cancel the strike but employees seem to be in no mood of relenting. So be ready for a tough start to the coming week, the report said.
