Kuldip Manak

Kuldip Manak was one of the greatest singers of Punjabi Music Industry. He is considered as the most influential Punjabi singer of all time. His original name was Latif Mohammad Khan and he was famous for singing a rare genre of Punjabi music which is Kaliyan. Instantly recognizable, his high pitch songs used to mesmerize the audience. “Teri Khatar Heere” was his debut album in the year 1973.

After that, he came up with Ektara in the year 1976. An all-time fan favorite, Kuldeep Manak will always be remembered by the Punjabi audience all across the world.


Gurdas Mann

He is loved by youth, youngsters and also senior citizens. Next in the list is the greatest Punjabi singer of the era. Gurdas Mann remained an epitome of traditional Punjabi music in the last two decades. He took the Punjabi music industry by storm in the year 1981 with his album Dil Da Mamla Hai. Other than this, his other songs like Challa, Boot Polishan were blockbuster hits.

This legend has done more than 30 albums and has written more than 300 songs. Moreover, his performance on the song “Ki Banu Dunia Da” with Diljit Dosanjh gained huge popularity. Also, this legendary Punjabi singer has won the best male playback singer at 54th National Film Awards.


Amar Singh Chamkila aka Chamkila is another iconic singer of the Punjabi music industry. One of the best stage performers in Punjab, this legend was heavily influenced by the rural folklore of Punjab. Lak Mera Kach Varga, Hikk Utte So Ja Ve were some of his best songs. However, he won the hearts of the Punjabi audience with his song, Pehle Lalkare Nal. He has inspired many singers, not only in the Punjabi industry but in Bollywood as well. Famous Bollywood music composer Amit Trivedi calls Chamkila “a legend, the Elvis of Punjab”.

Surjit Singh Binderakhia

His career was short but he made an impact on the Punjabi audience with his voice. He had to struggle a lot to gain fame. At first, he used to sing Bolliyan for his college Bhangra team. His first break in the industry came in the year 1990 with his album Addi Utte Ghum. Nowadays also, the youth loves his songs. Some of his famous songs are Tera Yaar Bolda, Dupatta Tera Sat Rang Da, and Jatt Di Pasand. However, he had a long journey to travel but died in the year 2003 at the age of 41 only.

Hans Raj Hans

Hans Raj is one of the most loved singer for his non-filmi Punjabi folk and Sufi music. After that, he started with Punjabi folk, devotional, and Sufi music. He has released his own ‘Punjabi-pop’ albums. However, he has made several albums ranging from religious to Bollywood. Hans Raj has done approximately 50 albums.

In 1999, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan chose him to sing a soundtrack he hadcomposed for a Bollywood film, Kacche Dhage.

Also, Hans Raj has been a music professor at Washington DC University and San Jose State University.

Yamla Jatt

This noted singer popular with a title of Yamla Jatt was a folk singer from Punjab. His style and aura were completely worth listening to. He used to play tumba and tied a turban styled as ‘Turla’. People used to consider him a rare pinnacle of the Punjabi music. However, he laid the foundation of contemporary music in east Punjab.

His infamous songs were Satguru Nanak Teri Leela Nyaari Ae, Whishkey Di Botal and Das Me ki Pyaar wiccho khattheya. Moreover, in 1956, Jawahar Lal Nehru awarded him with a gold medal for his excellence in music. Also, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award in 1989 by the National Academy of Dance, Drama, and Music.

Jaspinder Narula

This Punjabi singer, amongst the very few lady singers in Punjab, has worked not only in the Punjabi music industry but has also done great work in Bollywood . From being a bhajan singer to Bollywood playback singer, her journey was a tough one. But with her strong and melodious voice, she took away the hearts of the audience. People used to call her the Madonna of Bollywood. She made her debut in Bollywood with the movie Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.


Harbhajan Mann

One of the most handsome singers in Punjabi industry, whom the ladies adore, Harbhajan Mann is the one who mesmerised the audience with his romantic songs. Not only romantic songs, he has sung songs of different genres. He got a breakthrough in his career in the year 1999 when India MTV and T-Series assisted his album Oye Hoye. His singing made way for his acting career in the Punjabi film industry. He has done many blockbuster Punjabi movies like Ji Aya Nu, Asan Nu Maan Watna Da and Dil Apna Punjabi.

Babbu Mann

Originally named Tejinder Maan, Babbu Maan is the most influential and popular Indian singer and songwriter who have given several hits. His songs exceptionally direct one to the path of the cruel reality of the world.

Mostly, Babbu Maan has worked in single tracks and eventually worked in various albums and movies as well. Also, Babbu Maan penned songs for albums like Sajjan Rumal De Gaya, Tu Meri Miss India, Talash: In Search of Soul and Itihaas.

Surinder Kaur

Best known for exceptional folk songs, Surinder Kaur was well defined as an Indian singer, songwriter, and playback singing as well. Moreover, this talented lady was also known as ‘Nightingale of Punjab’. However, she did playback singing for Hindi films between 1948 and 1952.

She received many awards for her contribution to the field of arts. Also, she received the Padma Shri Award in 2006. Surinder Kaur recorded more than 2,000 songs. She along with her husband Joginder Singh Sodhi sang many folk classics written by eminent Punjabi writers.

The classic hits include Lathe Di Chadar, Chan Kithe Guzari Aai Raat, Shonkan Mele Di, Gori Diyan Jhanjran and Sarke Sarke Jandiye Mutiare.
