The abduction and rape of a seven-year-old girl in Jaipur on Monday evening led to violence in the city. Angry protesters and local residents torched around 160 vehicles and pelted stones at homes and police. As a precautionary mesaure, internet service was also suspended in some areas of Jaipur for 24 hours.
Anand Shrivastava, Jaipur Police Commissioner said, “The incident happened between 7.30 and 8 pm (Monday) when a motorcycle-borne criminal took the girl away and dropped her near her home around two hours later. In between, he raped the girl. The girl told the ordeal to her parents, who then told the police and we lodged a case.”
A victim’s family member said, “The man beat her with a belt, there are also stitches on her forehead. He left her where we found her about ten to fifteen kilometres from home”. The girl was immediately rushed to the Kanwatia hospital. After the incident came to light, a large number of people gathered outside the hospital and protested.
Manoj Kumar, DCP North said, “We have deployed additional policemen in the area to maintain law and order. The situation is under control and efforts are being made to arrest the accused”. Jaipur Police has constituted 12 teams to trace the accused. Moreover, six police companies, including the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary, have been deployed in the tense localities of Jaipur.
The incident comes close to heels of a similar incident 10 days ago wherein a four-year-old girl was picked up from outside her house in a similar manner and was raped.
