Rahul Gandhi writes his paternal grand-father’s last name (Ferox Gandhi) but he has taken his paternal grandmother’s gotra (Indira Gandhi’). He revealed his gotra while offering prayers at Brahma temple in Pushkar in poll-bound Rajasthan, which has often been questioned by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). When asked about it by the priest, Rahul said that his gotra is Dattatreya and that he is a Kaul Brahmin – taking the Nehru lineage.
During the puja, Rahul Gandhi also referred to his documents concerning his ancestors.
In October last, when the Congress president visited the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, BJP spokesperson had targeted Rahul. Sambit Patra had then asked the Gandhi scion to reveal his gotra.
Before visiting Pushkar, Rahul Gandhi on Monday morning performed ‘ziyarat’ at the dargah of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer. He was accompanied by Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot and former CM Ashok Gehlot.
According to reports, the Congress party had earlier planned a roadshow of Rahul Gandhi in Ajmer. However, he was advised by the Special Protection Group to not go ahead due to security concerns.
The Congress is eyeing a comeback in poll-bound Rajasthan, currently ruled by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Questions have been raised by the BJP over who the chief minister would be if Congress wins the Assembly elections. The Congress hasn’t been able to name the Congress CM for Rajasthan if it comes to power. Two names that of Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot are doing the rounds.
