A woman in Chohtan town of Barmer in Rajasthan today committed suicide along with her five daughters by jumping into a water tank. The woman first pushed her daughters into the tank and then followed suit. The police is yet to ascertain the exact reasons for the extreme step.
According to news reports, 42-year-old Vanudevi of Bawdi Kalla threw her daughters into the tank one-by-one before jumping herself. The deceased girls have been identified as Santosh (13), Mamta (11), Naina (09), Hansa (07) and Hemlata (03).
Locals rushed to the spot and informed the Chohtan Police. A police team led by Chohtan police station incharge Ramesh Dhaka flushed out the bodies.
A sense of despair prevailed in the area after the incident. The police are questioning Vanudevi’s husband Ranaram and the villagers over the episode.
The incident comes close to the heels of another woman committing suicide along with her 4-year-old daughter by jumping in front of a moving train last week. The woman had left behind a suicide not alleging exploitation by her husband and in-laws.
