Shah Rukh Khan has been finally named as the lead actor in the biopic of India’s first astronaut Rakesh Sharma. “We are doing that film with Shah Rukh Khan,” co-producer of the film Ronnie Screwvala told PTI.
The film will start rolling in February-March next year. “We haven’t announced the female lead yet,” he said. Mahesh Mathai will make the film who has made films like Bhopal Express and Broken Threads.
Rakesh Sharma is the only Indian astronaut to have travelled to space. On reaching outer space with Commander Yury Malyshev and Flight Engineer Gennadi Strekalov who were also part of the programme, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had held a joint television conference with him. She asked him how India looked from space, he had replied, “Saare Jahan Se Achha“. It alluded to the iconic patriotic poem written by Iqbal while India was under British rule. ‘Saare Jahaan Se Acha’ is also the tentative title of the film, which had been earlier named ‘Salute’.
Earlier, Aamir Khan was cast as the lead of Rakesh Sharma biopic. However, he backed out of the project later owing to his dream project Mahabharat. “Aamir is not a part of the Salute, the tentative name for Rakesh Sharma biopic. He’s not in it, either as an actor or as a co-producer,” SpotboyE report had stated earlier.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film Zero is set to hit screens in December. SRK will play the role of Bauua Singh, a vertically challenged character, in the film. The film also stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.
